SCFS Changing Lives – One Customer at a Time – The Story of Rosalie Hill

Rosalie Hill

Rosalie Hill is a single mother with two adult sons and one teenage daughter who still lives in the home.  Several life-changing events occurred which placed Ms. Hill in a state of crisis.  A friend told her about the Community Services Block Grant Program.  She quickly contacted the Brunswick Neighborhood Service Center and met with Jerry Merrick, CSBG Case Manager.

During the intake process, Mr. Merrick learned that Ms. Hill had lost her job due to illness.  Her utilities were about to be disconnected, her vehicle was about to be repossessed, and the mortgage holder was on the verge of foreclosing on the home she has lived in for ten (10) years.  After confirming Ms. Hill’s eligibility for the program, Mr. Merrick assisted Ms. Hill in developing an action plan with specific goals to help turn things around.  The action plan included referrals to Brunswick County Department of Social Services, Brunswick Family Assistance, and St. Brendan’s Catholic Church.  Direct financial assistance through the Community Services Block Grant Family Empowerment and Self-Sufficiency Project was also provided.  Direct financial assistance was provided that stopped the foreclosure proceedings, that prevented her vehicle from being repossessed, and that kept her utilities on.

Although the direct assistance met her immediate need, Ms. Hill needed employment.  Mr. Merrick referred Ms. Hill to the Brunswick County Employment Security Commission.  Ms. Hill was successful in obtaining full time employment with David L. Haught, PA where she serves as an Office Assistant.  Ms. Hill’s determination and commitment to working the action plan with the help of her case manager, Mr. Merrick, has resulted in Ms. Hill’s life being changed in a positive way.  Ms. Hill has successfully completed the program.  The income she earns through her employment has brought her annual income above the federal poverty guidelines.  Ms. Hill is thriving and is a self-sufficient citizen of Brunswick County.
